Monday Math: All About Numbers

Okay so yesterday was supposed to be my math day on here. But I thought I'd take the day off and head to a family cookout/gender reveal. The day off: It's a girl! (No, not mine! We're not at that point yet.)

Anyways!!! So I finally got my "All About Numbers" Chart made! I forgot to take a picture of it though. *sad face* One of my students saw it and got really excited! "That looks awesome!" he said. He's one of my rough kids... but he's definitely a visual learner so I am excited I could entice him to learn some math simply by making something visually pleasing!

You know that's the thing about teaching. You never know what the trigger will be. What will cause a student to WANT to learn? Each year I have parents write me a letter at the beginning of the year telling me about their child. This year I had parents tell me that their children enjoyed learning through games, through songs, by doing engaging activities... not one of them told me that if I made something look nice then I would entice their child to learn! But I love it! If you know me, I get irritated when things looks messy. Which makes it perfect sense that I redid that chart 3 times to get it to look "just right."

So here is where things get tricky for me in math. I have been doing this journal that I found for free on the internet.... at first I thought it was GREAT! I loved it! Even now, I think it's GREAT for OLDER kids. But it is just too hard for mine. They look at it and don't know what to do. Their faces say "huh?" even when they are not talking!

So I created a Number Journal for my kids that allows them to represent numbers in a variety of ways. And I love it! Like REALLY love it! Like I'm about to throw away close to 10 dollars worth of paper, ink, and binding rods in order to create new journals that will work much better for my class.

I guess thats what it is all about. Trial and Error. Finding what works best for your class! And with this Common Core thing, thats what we all are having to do.
If you think this would be a useful tool for you and your students you can purchase this here for just $3.00.

How are you teaching counting and cardinality in your kindergarten classroom?

New things are coming!

Okay, I'm gonna try something new with this little 'ol blog of mine. I'm gonna try a schedule. We'll have to see how it works out... but hopefully with a schedule my blogging will be a little bit more regular.

Sundays I will be linking up with Clutter-Free Classroom for "Snapshot on Sunday." This will serve as a time for me to show what has been going on in the classroom through the use of photos. Sometimes you may end up seeing photos of students, other times I may post center photos or hall displays. But my goal is that whatever it is that I post will give you some sort of inspiration or motivation for the upcoming week.

Mondays for me will be "Math Mondays." This is very common I know. But with the curriculum changing all over, hopefully I can share how I am teaching CC standards in my classroom during math.

Wednesday will be "What I'm Pinning Wednesday." I used to link up to Laura (Kinder Kraziness) every Wednesday and I loved it! So I have decided to continue on my own and dedicate Wednesday to Pinterest ideas that are MOSTLY related to my unit for the upcoming week.

Fridays I will be linking up to TBA's Freebie Friday.

Saturdays will be Say Whatever Saturday. Now I honestly do not know who this was created by. But I love it. And lets be honest, you know me... I can't keep myself out of the blog. So this will be my day to say whatever I want! :) (FYI: More than likely will not be teacher-related.)

I'll take Tuesdays and Thursdays off from the scheduling. So you may or may not here from me on those days.

A Funny and a Winner

So I stayed late to work on my sub folder that is due on Friday. It's 6. Which is really late for me this year. I call my boyfriend and tell him that I was on my way home... you know that way he could finish dinner up or finish cleaning or something. He laughs! LAUGHS! I am now confused. Why would he laugh. Then he asks me if I plan on walking home. Still confused, I say no. And then it clicks.... he has the car today! So I'm stuck at school for just a little bit longer while he comes and picks me up. I guess thats the joy of having only owning one vehicle. :(

(I hope that made you laugh, because in retrospect, it's KINDA funny.)

But on the BRIGHT side of things, I have picked a winner! I know, the giveaway was over at 11 last night... but let's all admit it... its the beginning of the school year, we are EVEN more exhausted then usual... therefore, I was PASSED OUT!

So now... without further ado, the winner is......

Congratulations Ina! I hope you love the packet! P.S. I love your name!!!

Now I Know My ABC's Giveaway Reminder!

Is it really just the second week that I have had these kiddos full time? It feels like I've had them forever. With 24 kiddos in my classroom it is super important to keep them working, keep them engaged. Otherwise my classroom is going to be the namesake of one of my favorite rollercoasters from when I was a kid myself, Chaos. (Opryland Theme Park) I have to admit though I have felt like I was on a roller coaster. To my TN friends who have 15, 18, even just 20 kids.... I am SUPER jealous! I'm hoping SOMEDAY soon, I can say that I only have 18... or even just 20 kids. I want to give these kids my all, and with so many its hard to do that. I will say I have survived. I am keeping my head above water... and I am making sure I am leaving early.

Speaking of leaving early, I need to get going now so I can make it on home. I just wanted to stop by and remind you that you have 6 hours left to enter to win my Now I Know My ABC's Phonics Packet! You won't want to miss this giveaway, because everyone is a winner this time!
Go ahead. Click here to go enter!
